David Garcia is a Music Educator from Mountain View, California. He is currently pursing his Bachlors of Music Education Pre-certification, Vocal Emphasis, from Chapman University. During his time at Chapman David has honed his skills of teaching for social justice and decolonizing the music industry. As a Chicanx queer cis gendered man, David uses his own identity and experiences of oppression and privilege as a starting point for courageous conversations in his classroom. During his time at Chapman University, David has aided in implementing initiatives to collectivize and empower the voices the historically marginalized groups of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American, LGBTQ+, and women on campus. David has helped write curriculum for the Chapman Ethnic studies minor and the Chapman diversity general education requirement, founded the Musicians of Color Association, hosted the first annual DEIA music education summit at the Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music, as well as continuing to support campus-wide diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
As a musician, David has had the opportunity to study with esteemed faculty by the likes of Dr. Tammy Yi, Dr. Stephen Coker, Dr. Paul Floyd, Dr. Rebecca Sherburn, and Dr. Robert Frelly. Currently, David is continuing to hone his musical and artistic skills in order to better represent his marginalized identity. He believes music is tool to build community and proliferate Sonya Renee Taylor's ideas of Radical Self-Love. David is a classical trained singer with knowledge in vocal pedagogy. As an educator, he uses his knowledge of vocal pedagogy to de-stigmatize cross-genre approaches. His approach to musicianship allows for music learners to utilize their own identity and experiences to inform their education.
Since 2014 David has worked at The Music School in Sunnyvale, California. There, he has taught and assisted in classes from Pre-K through high school. David has had the opportunity to work with The Music School directors, Doris Harry and Chantelle Urbina, as well as many other wonderful music educator who he has invaluably learned from. It is at The Music School that David was able to hone his skills as a young educator, implementing differentiated student based learning approaches. David uses concepts of radical self-love, cultural responsive teaching, and Brave Spaces as the basis for all student’s learn in his teaching. As a life long learn, David approaches all teaching as a new opportunity to explore new and in-depth pedagogies which foster a community that is critical conscious, self-empowered, and radically loving.
Originally from Mountain View, California, David’s singer career formally started under the tutelage of music educator Nick Patton, in the Graham Middle School spring musicals. In high school David had the privilege of singing with the Mountain View High School Madrigals, under the direction of Jill Denny. During his time in Madrigals David had the privilege of traveling across the global to countries such as Croatia, Saint Lucia, Scotland, England, and Wales. It is in Madrigals David honed his skills as a global citizenship, leadership, and teamship.
At the moment David is working to expand the Musician of Color Association, pursue research on radical self-love, and hone his skills of orchestration and composition. But this summer you will find him relaxing after his sixth year at Chapman. One more to go! Cheers to senior year, folx!
With Radical Love,
David A. Garcia
